explain the pyramid of numbers in a food web or ecosystem
What is pyramid of numbers in an ecosystem or food chain
Pyramid of numbers in an ecosystem refers to the number of individual organisms at each trophic level which decreases progressively from the first to the last trophic level in a food chain.
Pyramid of number in a food chain or food web is a diagrammatic representation of food chain in which producers form the base and the carnivores form the apex.
In a food chain or food web there are relative number of organisms at different trophic levels, normally the number of organisms increases progressively from the first to the last trophic level for example
1. Grasses - grasshoppers - lizard -Hawks
The number of grass is eaten by grasshoppers is greater than the number of grasshoppers
while the number of grasshoppers eating by lizard is greater than the number of lizards and
finally the number of lizards eating by Hawks is greater than the number of Hawks.
The illustration given above is a typical example of pyramid of numbers found in a food web or an ecosystem or a food chain.
Soho from the illustration or explanation above one discovers that there is a progressive decrease in the number of organisms from the first to the last trophic level.
Show the diagrammatic representation of this progressive decrease and the number of organisms along the food chain is called pyramid of numbers.
Show pyramid of numbers is a figurative explanation of how energy is dispersed among organisms within an ecosystem the reducing numbers to which an organism can consume more than its figure and so decreases the number of organisms as it hovers down the pyramid level
